The Story
In Search of Uhuru.
I was in corporate America and was enjoying my successful career in sales. With all of the success that I was experiencing, I was encouraged by a close friend to take a vacation, and without a doubt, the first destination on my list was Brazil. As the universe would have it, that trip didn’t work out, so I was left with nowhere to go. It was at that moment that another close friend of mine encouraged me to go to Tanzania, but I knew absolutely nothing about it, except that there was an island called Zanzibar on the coast of Tanzania which was also a club in Santa Monica,CA
I decided to go, and I’m so glad I did because I fell in love with Mama Africa. During my first trip, I was asked where I was from. Most of the locals assumed that I was either South African, Nigerian or Ghanaian. I had to explain a hard truth to my new found friends on the continent - I am African American and due to our complicated history, primarily the slave trade, I didn’t know where I come from. Because of the brutality of the slave trade, we were completely ripped and disconnected from our African roots.
Even with that, the locals still couldn’t understand and some even felt sorry for me. With that, I started In Search Of Uhuru in order to find out and have a solid answer to the question, “Where am I from?”. I figured, Once I have done that I will experience a spiritual sense of Uhuru, which means freedom in Swahili.
Also, In Search of Uhuru will be used as a bridge between Africa and her Diapsora. Since I started my search for uhuru, I have developed lifelong relationships not only on the continent, but across the world. I was crowned prince in the kingdom of Ororuwo, Nigeria and have been afforded to opportunity to travel to 14 African countries and counting.
My desire is to see the Diaspora reconnect to Africa and be apart of the larger African community. Our future depends on it.
